Anupam (Anu) Bhakta is a sophomore transfer student at Columbia University where he is double majoring in Mathematics & Statistics and Computer Science. Although originally an immigrant from India, he has lived over half of his life in Metairie, Louisiana. Anu is also currently doing research in applied statistics and machine learning with professors from Baruch College and MIT to gain experience in these fields. Furthermore, he also aims to use this research experience to aid his decision on whether to attend graduate school for a PhD right after finishing his undergraduate degree or not. As he enjoys the problem-solving involved with mathematics, he plans use this knowledge in a highly quantitative field such as quantitative finance. Outside of school, Anu is an avid collector of skills. Whether it’s teaching himself various musical instruments or learning languages, he is always occupied with something. Although he is undecided on whether he wants to pursue the research or industry path first, he knows this fellowship experience will help him with choosing.
